Description

Along the Flonterbach and Ruwer rivers, this themed circular trail offers many interesting stories about the aquatic animals and plant species that live here.

We begin this 8.5 km hike at the Schillingen recreation area, which leads us along the Flonterbach stream to the Ruwer River. Extensive removal of coniferous plantations has created sunny, fallow grassland areas in the river meadows, which now provide habitat for numerous, sometimes endangered, butterfly species. At various points in the Ruwer and its tributaries, narrow pipes have been replaced with wider culverts, allowing aquatic life to migrate freely and reach their preferred spawning grounds. In spring, wild daffodils bloom along the middle reaches of the Ruwer, attracting admirers every year at the end of March/beginning of April during the Daffodil Festival.
