Directions
This route description of the Saar-Hunsrück Trail begins in Trier, Germany's oldest city. From there, the trail leads through the Ruwer Valley with its vineyards and wine villages to Kell am See in the Hunsrück region.
From there, it continues via Hermeskeil into the Hunsrück, where the landscape reveals its hilly side. The trail crosses the Dollberge ridge and later, with the Erbeskopf (816 m), the highest elevation in Rhineland-Palatinate. This section also offers much in terms of cultural history: the Celtic ringfort near Otzenhausen and the medieval Wildenburg Castle near Kempfeld. Between the ringfort and the Wildenburg, the Saar-Hunsrück Trail traverses the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park in four stages. The section in the eastern Hunsrück between Idar-Oberstein and Boppard impresses with its combination of spectacular views, forest passages, and natural tranquility interspersed with striking gorges. Historical sites such as the old town of Idar-Oberstein, the medieval Herrstein, the castle town of Kastellaun and the Rhine town of Boppard are located along the hiking trail.
