Description
On meadow paths through lush green meadows and over gentle hills, on winding trails through dark forests: The Greimerather Höhenweg leads through the original landscape of the Black Forest high forest, often through lonely forest passages and along crystal-clear streams.
The cross-border path connects the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Greimerath with the Saarland town of Bergen. From Greimerath to Bergen, the hike mostly follows secluded paths through the Greimerath Forest. The trail leads through quiet woodland sections to the Judenkopf hill.
Nothing remains of the former Luise ore mine, which was located in what is now the "Ochsenwiese" nature reserve, and the mine entrances, which once ran under the main road and deep into the Judenkopf slope, are now sealed. From a bench at the Ochsenwiese nature reserve, one can enjoy views across the wet meadows. This approximately 60-hectare area is home to, among other species, the endangered whinchat, as well as the threatened meadow bird species snipe and meadow pipit.
The Traumschleife (Dream Loop) trail runs along a meadow path bordering the nature reserve. Taurus cattle have been grazing there since 2013. They are intended to help keep the wet meadows open, thus ensuring the habitat for the rare animals and plants. At the end of the hike, a path through a meadow leads behind the village's sports complex to the church, in whose shade stands a Lourdes grotto.
The trail has been certified as a premium trail with 65 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.
Directions
Arriving at the "Im Hölzchen" hiking parking area, we turn left briefly and then immediately right again, following a path to the wooden bridge over the Großbach stream. We cross the stream and soon after the district road, hiking through the heart of the nature reserve until we reach the main road. Now we climb uphill for about 1 km to the ridge of the Judenkopf forest. A narrow border path leads us to a small seating area. This spot offers another good view. We continue along the border path, initially climbing gently, then descending steadily. We come to a wider path crossing our route, which after 500 m leads us to the Saar-Hunsrück Steig premium long-distance hiking trail. Both paths run parallel to a stream until we reach the edge of the village of Bergen.
Here the Dream Loop and the Saar-Hunsrück Trail diverge again, and we follow a narrow path to the left, leading us for almost 2 km through rising terrain with mixed forest. At the end, we reach a forest road called "Kastanienallee" (Chestnut Avenue). We hike along a path beside this avenue and soon catch sight of the village of Greimerath once more.
We reach a wooden bridge over the Eselsbach stream via various forest tracks and paths. 50 meters beyond the bridge, a meadow path leads us back through the old village center of Greimerath to our starting point next to St. Nicholas Church.
