Description

The tour leads through the western part of the Hochwald holiday region via quiet roads, forest and farm tracks, passing through a total of 9 villages and by the impressive Heid Castle.

The 44-kilometer circular route not only climbs 700 meters in altitude but also offers a diverse mix of landscapes and village culture that the region has to offer. Highlights include the Schillingen leisure park and Heid Castle.

Directions

From the church in Hentern, a steep climb leads to the neighboring village of Baldringen, offering a beautiful view of the Ruwer River near Zerf. Just as it climbed to Baldringen, the route now descends to Zerf, where the first refreshment stops await at the Winzerpost country inn and the Oase pizzeria . From there, the route is mostly flat, leading to the Oberzerf district and then along a well-maintained forest path to Greimerath. Here, you can refuel at the Panzhaus inn or the Greimerather Forst restaurant . In Greimerath, head back towards Zerf, but instead of going into the village center, which you already passed in the first section, take a loop through the Frommersbach district and join the Ruwer-Hochwald cycle path. Follow this path for approximately 2 km before leaving it again and heading towards the Schillingen recreation area, passing the Götterbuche (Beech of the Gods). With its pond, the Spießbratenhalle ( a restaurant serving spit-roasted meat), and the idyllically situated Fatima Chapel, it's definitely worth a stop. You'll pass the fifth of the nine towns along the western edge of the village and continue to Heddert. From Heddert, the route leads downhill for about 5 km along state road 143 and district road 43 towards Burg Heid – a privately owned castle complex that originated as a manor house in the 14th century. Following the road, you'll rejoin the Ruwer-Hochwald cycle path, which you only cross at this point. After crossing the Ruwer River, the route continues along a pleasant forest path for a few hundred meters alongside the river and then climbs up to Lampaden via scenic field paths. The route then continues over the ridge to Paschel and Schömerich, before completing the loop in Hentern after 44 varied kilometers. The tour can be concluded at the Landgasthof Kopp
