Description

Where bicycles now roll, trains once steamed. On the former railway line of the historic Ruwer-Hochwald Railway, you can now cycle along the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Path from Hermeskeil to Trier. Railway cycle path cycling par excellence: Where trains once ran, bicycles now roll from the heights of the Hunsrück hills into the romantic Ruwer Valley.

Directions

Start: From your accommodation, cycle to Trier main train station and take the RegioRadler bus from the bus station to Hermeskeil, stop "Bahnhof" (train station). You can find the departure times at www.vrt-info.de

From the Hermeskeil train station bus stop, walk to the former station building (approx. 30 m). The Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Path begins to the right of the former station building. Follow the signs towards Reinsfeld and Kell am See. The Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Path offers a leisurely ride through the plateau-like landscape at the foot of the Hochwald forest, passes under the motorway, and leads to the officially recognized resort town of Reinsfeld. Here you can admire an old locomotive right next to the cycle path. The cycle path continues through a landscape of forests and meadows, eventually bringing you to the health resort of Kell am See. The route goes right through the town, passing the old station building dating from 1889.

The cycle path then leads you through the "Keller Mulde" nature reserve. Soon you'll cross the Ruwer River for the first time and reach the former Zerf train station. This is essentially the midpoint of the cycle route, which turns north here and follows the course of the Ruwer towards the Moselle River. Passing Hentern, Hinzenburg, and Gusterath-Tal, the route continues to Sommerau. The first vineyards now appear.

Later, you will cross a 39-meter-long bridge made of Siberian larch. The steel girders of the former railway bridge have been replaced with wood. The bridge builders used the famous 14th-century Chapel Bridge in Lucerne as their model.

They finally reach Waldrach, the largest municipality in the Ruwer Valley. A replica of a Roman aqueduct here testifies to the engineering skills of ancient engineers who used this structure to supply the Roman city of Trier with water. The forests now give way to vineyards.

Passing the wine villages of Kasel and Mertesdorf, you finally reach Trier-Ruwer. This is the official end of the Ruwer-Hochwald cycle path.

To get to Trier, follow the main road (Ruwerer Straße) to your left. You will pass the Hotel zur Post and shortly afterwards an Aral petrol station (on the left-hand side of the road) and leave the Ruwer district. The road then makes a slight right-left bend. Here, leave the road and continue straight ahead towards Trier city centre. You will see disused railway tracks on your right. After about 1 kilometer, keep right towards Trier city centre, cross the disused railway tracks, and drive around the sewage treatment plant, through an underpass beneath the railway tracks onto Metternichstraße. Keep left here. You will soon pass Rudolf-Diesel-Straße and after about 300 meters, turn right onto Dasbachstraße. Follow this street to the end and you will reach Loebstraße. Turn right briefly, cross Loebstraße at the pedestrian crossing, then turn left again and then right under the motorway. After passing under the motorway, the path bends to the left and you soon reach another road. Turn right onto this road and follow it for a few meters, then turn left at the bend just before the Aldi car park onto a paved cycle path. Follow this path down to the Moselle River. Continue cycling along the Moselle for the next few kilometers until you reach Trier-Zurlauben and the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge. Before the bridge, turn sharply left uphill towards Trier-Centrum and the Porta Nigra, then sharply right at the top. You will reach the main road/traffic lights at the bridge. To get to the city center, follow the signs for Porta Nigra and the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) on your left across the main road and continue straight ahead along Merianstraße. At the end of Merianstraße, cross Friedrich-Ebert-Allee at the traffic lights and turn left onto a pedestrian/cycle path running parallel to Friedrich-Ebert-Allee. At the next traffic light, cross Bruchhausenstraße and continue straight ahead through the green spaces, cross another street and finally reach the Porta Nigra. The tourist information office of Trier Tourism and Marketing GmbH is also located here.
