Fatima Chapel
Description
Detailed description
In 1931/32, the farmer Johann Werner, a 63-year-old widower, built a wayside shrine to the Virgin Mary on his property, about 2 km from Schillingen.
Every evening he prayed the Rosary there, and soon other men from the village joined him.
Following the example of Klaus von der Flüe, he built a simple hut where he lived during the summer. When he died in October 1933, the men of the village continued the Rosary prayer. The wayside shrine was replaced by a grotto made of stones. On Trinity Sunday in 1936, a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, brought from Fatima (Portugal), was placed in the grotto and consecrated.
After the war, primarily with donations from two of Johann Werner's daughters, who had emigrated to America in 1926, the chapel in front of the grotto was built of solid stone. The chapel was consecrated on Whit Monday, May 14, 1951.
In 1972, the chapel and the entire property became the property of the parish.
The chapel remains a place of retreat to this day.
