The Saar-Hunsrück Trail

54427 Kell am Seeapprox. 1.8 km from Kell am See

Description

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig trail runs along a varied route, mostly on natural paths, and is consistently "unmistakable" with visual markings and signposts indicating distances to nearby, medium and distant destinations.

Detailed description

Between Boppard, Trier, and Perl, the Saar-Hunsrück Trail, stretching approximately 415 km in 27 stages, traverses a magnificent low mountain range, offering sheer diversity with countless impressions and opportunities. Here, nature lovers will discover everything their hearts desire: expansive forests, lush meadows, idyllic streams, impressive ridges, steep vineyards, historical monuments, and varied paths with breathtaking panoramas.

The Saar-Hunsrück Trail has been awarded the "German Hiking Seal" as a premium trail, the highest distinction a hiking trail can achieve in Europe. It is unique in Europe as the only long-distance hiking trail where more than 70% of the route consists of natural paths, with less than 4% of the asphalt surface.
With its constant alternation of valleys and hills, the Saar-Hunsrück Trail offers a challenging mix of terrain and elevations. The clever route planning incorporates many small details along the way, ensuring hikers are constantly surprised by new impressions. At Keller Steg, hikers must decide which direction to continue, as this is where the routes from Idar-Oberstein, Trier, and Perl, which run through Saarland, converge.
In a nationwide public vote organized by the magazine "Wandermagazin," in which nearly 28,000 hikers participated, the Saar-Hunsrück Trail was voted Germany's most beautiful long-distance hiking trail in 2017. This makes it the first German long-distance hiking trail to receive this prestigious award twice, having previously won the competition in 2009.
